Abstract
The paper presents results of a study undertaken by the Centre for International Studies (CIS), University of Toronto and the Centre for Analysis and Forecasting (CAF), Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) under the aegis of the Q-Squared Project, “Combining Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches in Poverty Analysis” (www.q-squared.ca). The core research question asked why certain population groups are unable or unwilling to shift livelihood patterns to benefit from, or minimize costs associated with, changes accompanying reform. The study adopted a “Q2” methodological orientation by integrating probabilistic and purposive sampling, narrative and numerical data, open-ended and fixed response questions as well as content and econometric analysis.
